Get in touch with your local building department. 

They'll be able to help determine if your build is possible at the size or location you're hoping. Secure financing. 

At this stage you're probably looking at pre-approval for a certain amount. Whether you're aiming for a construction loan, re-finance of your current mortgage, a new mortgage, a line of credit or a number of other options it's crucial to know the general range of your spending ability for the project. 

In order to proceed to the next step, this is very important.

Secure your team. 

Some folks know a General Contractor that they trust or a Design firm or individual that they trust.

Start Designing.

This process can take as little as a week and as long as you want. Keep a Pinterest board or scrap book full of ideas and details that inspire you. Now is the time to implement those ideas, or at least suggest them.
